Podere l’Aja is located to approximately 500 meters of height within the Chianti Classico hills in the heart of the ancient Chianti League. The Farm is approximately 700 meters, 10 minutes walking, from the center of Radda In Chianti; the ancient ramparts of the town are well visible from the farm and are distant as the crow flies less than 400 meters.
The estate is made up of a central core where all edifices and wine cellars, for the vinification, are located, as a kind of small “village”, and a wide surrounding land composed by a vineyard, an olive grove and an orchard. All the edifices were renovated over the years; the pre-existing prefabricated sheds have been replaced by edifices in stone, in the respect of the local architecture. The training and passion in the field of engineering and architecture have led the owners to the constant search of the constructive harmony and environmental integration.
In the course of the decades, the vines that surround the Farm have been joined by other vineyards in the area, all within a radius of 2-3 Km from the central core.
To be able to have vineyards planted on different kind of soil and with various exposures allows us to have Sangiovese wines with different features, as this grape has a great sensibility to the soil climate based on its genetics. Currently we have approximately twelve hectares of vineyard, for a total production of 500-600 hectoliters/year divided in several labels (according to the quality of the vintage) with a commercial potentiality of approximately 70.000 bottles/year. All the grapes used for the vinification are produced by the company.
The pest control is carried out without chemicals, only through mechanical means. The company has a wine cellar equipped for the direct selling; upon request we organize guided tours of the cellar with tasting of our wines together with typical and local products.
Radda in Chianti is a diamond inside the Chianti Classico, wines of great territorial nature, elegant and mineral are produced there.
Highlighting a heritage of old vines to which, over the years, new plots of ground were added, Chianti Classico is produced in 3 farms (Spanda, Aia and Chielle) that surrounded Radda in Chianti at a height of 500m.
The combination of different exposures on the same clay-limestone soil gives a great complexity of Sangiovese wines that represent even more the grapevine.
The grapes are hand-picked only when they have reached full maturation; these are the fruit of a scrupulous agronomic conduction that leaves no stone unturned in practice. The selection of the grapes in the vineyard and the following fermentation in the vats, guarantees the full expressiveness of the wine that then matures in oak barrels and/or tonneaux.
Under the lead of the oenologist Federico Staderini, we have selected a cru coming from our more unique vine that has already won prestigious awards.
Both in the cellar and the vineyards we have always operated with respect of our grounds, of our air and our plants, from 2017 we have started the procedures in order to officially certify our modus operandi for the organic certification.
In order to treat our grapes in the best way with the aim of obtaining high-end wines, the wine cellar has been widened, restructured and supplied with modern systems in 2009. It is currently structured in two distinguished and separated areas: the first one with all the equipment for the first phase of the vinification; the second one, of traditional appeal, where the wine, according to the type, rests and matures in Slavonia oak barrels, Barriques and Tonneaux of French oak until it reaches the typical body of a high-end product. In total the cellar has a capacity of 2500 Hl.
